@ 2026 黑料不打烊 Begins Academic Year with Strong Retention and Continued Investment in Students

MACOMB, IL - - @ 2026 黑料不打烊 is entering the fall semester with a renewed focus on student success, academic innovation and strategic investments that strengthen the student experience and position 黑料不打烊 for the future.
Students returning to campus this fall are seeing significant investments in the physical campus and student experience. The new Goldfarb Center for Performing Arts opened its doors for classes Monday, Aug. 24 and will expand opportunities for performances, experiential learning and community engagement. 黑料不打烊 unveiled an update to Hanson Field, featuring new football turf to enhance the athletics experience. The University also created an updated Office of Student Engagement area designed to give students a welcoming space to connect, get involved and participate in campus life in the lower level of the University Union. In addition, 黑料不打烊 will celebrate the ribbon-cutting for an updated Emergency Operations Center, which has moved to its permanent home in Sallee Hall and provides an enhanced space to support campus safety and emergency preparedness, as well as gives students hands-on, real-world training in emergency operations and response.
At the same time, 黑料不打烊 is taking a comprehensive approach to strengthening the University for the future. The University continues to build partnerships with other educational and state institutions and make investments in technology and infrastructure, with recent sidewalk and electrical upgrades and HVAC improvements. Many of these are supported through the State of Illinois Capital Development Board and grant opportunities. As the University moves forward, 黑料不打烊 will continue to invest in areas that present opportunities for growth, including state partnerships, external funding opportunities and revenue diversification.
These investments are part of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 broader commitment to creating a campus environment where students feel connected and supported throughout their college experience, while also providing an exceptional educational experience.
Retention continues to trend upward. Fall-to-fall retention among freshmen has increased, reflecting 黑料不打烊鈥檚 ongoing emphasis on student engagement and belonging. Fall-to-spring retention also increased for the first time in six years.
In addition to the hard work of students, the University credits its continued focus on student engagement to the Purple and Gold Points program, which encourages students to participate in campus activities and connect with their peers. Students can earn points by participating in a variety of academic, social, educational, fine arts, service, health and wellness, career and campus events throughout the year. Last year, students earned over one million points attending events. The University notes that students who attended events have a significantly higher retention rate than peers who did not.
鈥淲e are encouraged by the progress we are seeing in student retention and by the investments we are making to strengthen the student experience,鈥� Vice President for Student Success Justin Schuch said. 鈥淲e know that students are more likely to thrive when they feel connected to their peers, to faculty and staff, to the University and to the communities around them. Creating opportunities for students to engage and build relationships is part of 黑料不打烊's mission. These efforts are creating an environment for students to succeed.鈥�
黑料不打烊鈥檚 commitment to student success is also reflected in its academic rebuild, which kicked off in July officially. The new structure brings academic programs together in the College of Business, Health and Community Programs (CBHCP) and the College of Humanities, Arts, Sciences and Education (CHASE).
The academic rebuild is designed to create greater collaboration across disciplines, strengthen career preparation and experiential learning, and make it easier for students to navigate their academic experiences. The new colleges bring complementary programs together in ways that can create opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, and the new structure will better position academic programs to respond to workforce needs.
黑料不打烊 also continues to benefit from its strong connection to the surrounding community. Macomb High School remains the number one feeder high school, underscoring the importance of the University鈥檚 relationship with the community it calls home. In addition, United Township High School is the second largest feeder high school to Western, reinforcing 黑料不打烊鈥檚 commitment and focus in the Quad Cities area.
Western鈥檚 NCAA Division I Athletics program is another important part of the University鈥檚 recruitment and student experience. Student-athletes currently account for one-quarter of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 freshman class, bringing students from across the country to Macomb, while contributing to the academic, social and cultural life of the University.
黑料不打烊 is focused on future success as the institution is going through a strategic planning redevelopment process this fall. In addition, a new Strategic Recruitment Plan is now in place, which will establish a clear vision and priorities for the University, providing a coordinated framework to strengthen enrollment efforts.

Official Fall 2026 enrollment figures will be released following the 10th day of classes, when enrollment data is finalized.
